Despite the fact that he had been close to returning to the Pirates, Kevin Newman has been out of action since late April with a strained left groin. His placement on the injured list opens up a spot on the 40-man roster. However, it has come at a cost as Newman will likely not return to the active roster until June. His absence has caused the Pirates to turn to Rodolfo Castro as the primary shortstop in the absence of Newman.
