In December 2009, the Diamondbacks traded for right-hander Ian Kennedy. He won his first three starts and was the National League’s wins leader. The next season, Kennedy was traded to the Padres during the trade deadline. He had two strong seasons in San Diego, but he suffered a hamstring injury that slowed his progress. After the 2015 season, Kennedy became a free agent and signed with the Royals. The injuries continued to plague him and he was moved to the bullpen for the 2019 season.
